5 Ways To Stay Active Without A Gym Membership

By , January 19, 2018

If you want to work out but don’t like gyms, don’t have time to go, or simply can’t afford a gym membership then don’t fret as there are so many ways you can work out without having to set foot in a gym.

1. Move those feet

Why run on a treadmill when you can get out in the great outdoors, take in the views and fresh air, much more appealing than a packed sweaty gym. Go to your local park or even around your neighbourhood, walk to the shop instead of driving or go for a nice hike with friends and family at the weekend, the possibilities are endless.

2. Cycling

Cycling is a great way to get around and a fantastic form of exercise. Why pay to sit on a bike in the gym that doesn’t go anywhere baffles me. Why not cycle to work or college, will save you paying for public transport, petrol and waiting for your bus/luas/train t to arrive, now you can just get up and go.

3. Swimming

Swimming is a great way to exercise your entire body. No need to join a gym if you just want to use the pool. Go to your local pool or even sea if you’re feeling adventurous. Swimming keeps your heart rate up, builds muscle strength, endurance, relieves stress, lowers risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Swimming is also one of the most effective ways to burn calories. A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in just a half an hour.

4. At Home Workouts

YouTube is a fantastic tool to any workout, there are so many free online videos, it’s like having your very own personal trainer in the comfort of your home. There are also lots of free workout apps you can download straight to your phone so wherever you are you can bring your workout with you.

5. Take The Stairs

If you are out shopping, at work, wherever you can take the stairs, do. Going up a few flights of stairs can really make a difference and it’s just one simple change in your daily routine. Something so simple can burn more calories per minute than jogging, reduce risk of stroke, help control weight and build muscle. Again why go to the gym and pay to go on a stair climber when you have access to free stairs everywhere.
