5 Natural Remedies To Prevent Migraines

By , September 4, 2014

There is nothing nice about migraines as any sufferer will tell you, they can wipe you out for days and leave you drained and exhausted. A lot of the time when you have a migraine there is nothing that can be done to ease the effects, that’s why it’s key to prevent rather than treat. Here are some easily accessible natural remedies:

1. Magnesium

Studies have shown that those who suffer from migraines have lower magnesium levels, so the consumption of oral magnesium can be effective for some people. One study showed that it was particularly effective for migraines associated with menstrual cycles.

2. Lavender

Inhaling two drops of lavender oil in a cup of boiling water has been known to prevent migraines, however it can also be applied topically without the need to dilute it. While it is safe for application, it should be not consumed orally.

3. Feverfew

Feverfew is a plant with daisy-like flowers and it’s quite similar to chamomile as it also stems from the chrysanthemum family. Studies have shown that taking fevertree as a supplement can significantly decrease the number of migraines in a month.

4. Ginger

Apparently ginger root works for both the prevention and acute treatment of migraines. When combined with feverfew and administered under the tongue, it is said to really help reduce the negative side effects of migraines.

5. Flaxseed

Migraines can be caused by inflammation which can be prevented or reduced by consuming omega-3 fatty acids. Of course you could take oral omega 3 tablets, but flaxseed is rich in omega 3s and it has the added benefit of nutrition. You can take it as an oil or ground up or even just add whole flaxseeds to your diet.
