5 Fabulous Hike & Spa Breaks in Ireland

By , August 19, 2020

Ireland is dotted with some spectacular hiking destinations. Did you ever think about combining an energising hike with a chilled spa experience for a truly holistic wellness break?

Here are 5 fabulous spas in Ireland that have amazing hiking opportunities on their doorsteps.

Croagh Patrick, Co. Mayo

Senses Spa at Hotel Westport

Croagh Patrick, commonly referred to as ‘The Reek’  isn’t for the faint hearted but the view from the top is worth the effort. This moderate to strenuous 7km hiking trail is just outside Westport in Co. Mayo. With a backdrop of Clew Bay and it’s 365 islands, this hike provides some of the most spectacular views Ireland has to offer.

A great place to base yourself is Hotel Westport, a 13 minute drive away. This hotel is home to the tranquil Senses Spa. Facilities at this peaceful sanctuary include a couples treatment room, hydrotherapy pool, tranquility room and much more. Try the ‘Reek Retreat’ package, which consists of a Hydrotherapy Bath, followed by a Swedish full body massage to ease aching and tired muscles.

Gap of Dunloe, Co. Kerry

Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa

This hike begins just 12km from Killarney town and takes you over the Gap of Dunloe through to Killarney National Park. The 11km hike intensity is strenuous and, like any hike, should be taken with care. On your journey you will be treated to plenty of picturesque views of heather topped mountains as well as the 3 lakes of Killarney.

After your trip through the Gap of Dunloe, treat yourself to some TLC at The Spa at Aghadoe Heights. If you find yourself missing the outdoors you will be happy to know that this spa rests on a hilltop with views overlooking the magnificent splendour of Lough Leane. It’s best to avoid intense therapies such as the ‘Deep Release Massage’ straight after your hike as your muscles may need a rest. Instead opt for something like the ‘Hot Stone Massage’ to relieve aches and pains.

Scilly Walk, Co. Cork

Kinsale Hotel & Spa

The Scilly Walk will take you on a 5.5km easy walk from Kinsale all the way to Charles Fort in Co. Cork. This coastal walk boasts panoramic views of Kinsale Harbour and the town itself.  The walk finishes at Charles Fort which is a 17th century military fortress famous for its iconic star shape.

In-keeping with your outdoor experience, Kinsale Hotel & Spa is set amongst wooded parkland with expansive views Oysterhaven Bay. This contemporary 4 star property is just 5 minutes from Kinsale town. Rest up from all the walking and opt for the ‘Elemis Best Food Forward’ treatment at their spa. This foot-focused tension release will be just what the doctor ordered after a day exploring. You may also enjoy a dip in their pool, hot tub or simply melt away in the sauna.

Great Sugarloaf Trail

ESPA at Powerscourt Hotel

The Sugarloaf is one of Wicklow’s most iconic landmarks. Its easily recognisable conical shaped summit provides impressive views across Dublin, Wicklow and the Irish Sea. It’s a moderate trail to the top but can be a bit challenging towards the summit. There is also a “Baby Sugarloaf” nearby where you can enjoy similar views but on an easier trail.

A 12 minute drive will take you to the luxurious Powerscourt Hotel. This 5-Star hotel is home to ESPA at Powerscourt which includes facilities such as a Swarovski Crystal-lit heated pool, state-of-the-art thermal suite, spa cafe and 20 treatment rooms. The harmony of the spa is reflected in the quiet serenity of the Sugar Loaf’s pyramid across the valley. Opt for the ‘Swedish Massage’ or ‘Aromatherapy Massage’ to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul  .

Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail, Co. Cavan

Slieve Russell Hotel & Ciuin Spa

The Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail, nicknamed the ‘Stairway to Heaven Walk’, has various routes that cater to all hiking abilities. The hike consists of a boardwalk weaving through a blanket bog. There are steep steps up the mountain where you will be treated to sweeping views of the low land below.

Slieve Russell Golf and Country Club is located just 35 minute away.  Book yourself into the Ciúin Spa for a well deserved massage and a soak in the hot tub. Spa facilities include experience showers, heated loungers, foot baths, ice fountains and sauna to mention a few. Try Ciúin Spas ‘Hot Mineral Body Boost’, designed to stimulate every cell in the body, helping alleviate muscular pain and remove toxins.

It was hard to narrow it down to 5 locations, as there are many stunning spa hotels with walking in Ireland that would make for a lovely stay if you’re hiking.

If you know someone special who loves hiking as much as their spa time, why not treat them to a Spas.ie Gift Voucher so they can combine the 2 and make it a true wellness break. Who knows, they might even invite you along!
