Learning more about microdermabrasion will hopefully help you to decide if it’s something you would consider.

What Is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure for getting rid of acne scars, sun spots and fine wrinkles. The treatment involves sandblasting the top layer of skin with a special hand held wand which emits aluminum oxide micro crystals. No lasers or chemicals are used. The treatment stimulates collagen production which helps the skin to rejuvenate more quickly after the procedure.

What does the treatment involve?
Before the treatment the skin is cleansed with a special gel. The practitioner then begins the treatment. The hand-held device is pressed against the skin and the practitioner moves in lines over the entire face. As the aluminum oxide micro crystals are flowing the device also vacuums up the dead skin cells and used crystals. After the treatment skin is soothed with a special cooling gel.

How long does it take?
A typical treatment can take up to half an hour for the face and up to an hour if it is to include other parts of the body.

How do I know it’s right for me?
Microdermabrasion is designed to get rid of or lessen the appearance of superficial acne scars, blotchy skin, white and blackheads, large pores and age or sun spots. It can also help to even the skin tone. All types of skin can be treated but it’s best to go for a consultation before considering the treatment as there are some skin conditions that mean microdermabrasion may be unsuitable for your skin.

Microdermabrasion is not recommended for anyone suffering from acute acne or active rosacea, weeping acne stages 3 or 4, diabetes, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, undiagnosed lesions, auto-immune diseases, fragile capillaries, lupus or keratosis.

How much does microdermabrasion cost?
Prices for the treatment vary but can cost roughly €100 for a 30 minute session and many places offer a reduction if you go for a few treatments.

Does it hurt?
Often referred to as the “lunchtime peel”, Microdermabrasion is a relatively painless treatment. Many people report itching or stinging when the crystals come in contact with their skin initially but this lessened over the course of the treatment. In the first 24 hours after the treatment skin appears pink but it should not be sore or itchy.

Are the effects visible straight away?
Some have reported that their skin looked better after the first treatment. Initially skin looks cleaner but major changes in the appearance of wrinkles or scars can take a few treatments.

What are the risks?
Microdermabrasion is non invasive so the main risk comes from unsterilised equipment. These problems are very rare though as salons are very cautious about cleaning and maintaining equipment.

When considering a new facial treatment it can be difficult to decide if it is right for you.
